When I first started at the gym, I paid for a few trainer sessions, and he had me doing the wall pushups, or using a bar in the squat rack at different angles, explaining that knee pushups don't engage abs and thighs. However, I assume they would help your arms if you're just starting out with arm stuff and want to build up strength. I have always had decent upper body strength, so your mileage may vary.
