Poem: The Raindrop

I actually wrote this three years ago, and used it for the 2008 Joyce Marshall Hsia Memorial Poetry Prize competition. I don't have it in my computer, so I thought I'd post it here.

It started with a drop down the
dome of the church,
so shaped, we called it the
USS Enterprise
(although it looks nothing like that famous ship, not really).
It slid down the riles and dangled
on the eaves where we were wont
to hide from the sermons
and snoring parents.
Huddled, we watched it hover above us-
we pointed and whispered and wondered
and our rhubarb must have done it in:
it fell, scarce an inch from our noses
on its saucy way down.
I swear, I think it winked
at me.
The other kids called me pretentious,
but I know
I'm special.
