The FUCK.

That Elizabeth Moon essay. I don't even. What. The. Fuck.

I just read Edward Said's chapter "On Defiance and Taking a Position" and I read it after a particularly trying article which was classist AND racist (I had a chat with another classmate about this article earlier today) and I gotta say, after reading the clusterfuck that was Moon's essay (and that troll in comments, who actually said that Japanese-Americans who submitted quietly to interment camps showed commendable behaviour, that that is how good citizens should behave in the face of a threatened state), I need a panacea of equal measure.

SERIOUSLY WHAT THE FUCK DID I JUST READ.

UGH.

HAPPY MALAYSIA DAY, EVERYBODY.

h/t from Jeff Vandermeer, MOON JUST DELETED THE COMMENTS!!!!

They started out sort of marginal, generic 'this is problematic a bit, but good otherwise', some folks taking issue and getting derailing replies.

Then some libertarian dude showed up, and some link-ins on Monday from some folks I respect. Basically it went crazy yesterday, with e-moon maintaining the whole way that all critics were wrong, 'misunderstanding', or bringing their own drama. Defenders started trolling the critics before they got replies, and then I stopped following along sometime last night for blood pressure reasons.

But reports are pretty crazy. Internment camp examples? Not there yet at this point.

Does anyone have screencaps?

God I hope there are screencaps.

Deleting is so weak. I understand flocking, if only to get some distance, but killing off a discussion because you don't like where it's going is intensely frustrating. And it doesn't help, because it completely precludes any future discussion bridging the sides, because now all pugilists are remembering their own interpretation of the exchange, worsening any acrimony.

Exactly. Especially when so many people took the time and energy to explain where the post went wrong. It's not fair, and completely disrespectful.
