Skool stuff

So! I have just regged for the courses that I'm OK'd to take:

FIRST SEMESTER:
English/CSCT 797* Politics For Our Times
Dr. Petra Rethman T, 9:30-11:30 CNH 317

English/CSCT 719* Public Intellectuals & Their Work: Intellectual Practices in Culture Studies & Politics
Dr. Henry Giroux T, 3:30-6:30, CNH 317

CSCT 700* Issues in Cultural Studies and Critical Theory I : Power/Knowledge/Critique
Dr. Susie O'Brien F, 12:30-3:30 CNH 317

SECOND SEMESTER:
ENG/CSCT 791* Rethinking Politics: Thinking Part War, Democracy, and Terror
Dr. Henry Giroux M, 3:30-6:30 CNH 317

ENG/CSCT 742* Mapping South Asian Masculinities
Dr. Chandrima Chakraborty T, 9:30-12:30 CNH 317

CSCT 701* Cultural Studies and Critical Theory II
Dr. Susan Fast Th, 9:30-12:30 CNH 317

I had actually applied to take Cultures of Modernism ahead of Mapping South Asian Masculinities. I'm not sure why I wasn't accepted for Cultures of Modernism, but I can go ask when I get into town. I'm particularly interested in that one, especially since the professor for it actually has speculative fiction listed in her profile as one of her teaching and supervisory interests, so I was hoping to get her to be my supervisor. I'll see if I can still get into that class.

To be honest, the timetable intimidates me. THREE HOUR CLASSES WTF. I mean, yeah, I get why, WisCon panels always felt like they needed to be way way longer.

School starts on Sept 13, so, I've got plenty of time to get settled and get used to walking to school or taking the bus and stuff.

I sign off in a couple of hours, and I don't know when I'll be back online on a full-time basis. Hopefully by next week I'll have internet in my new place.

Three hour classes can be really great for generating in-depth discussion and can fly by faster than you'd think -- but when I've taught them or taken them, I've always been completely wiped out afterwards . . .

That's what I'm looking forward to, and am terrified by. Especially since in the first term I've got two 3-hr classes in a single day. At least I only go to school twice a week?!

Three hour classes can fly once you're used to them; after my last year at SMU, whenever I was in a room with a 50 or 75-minute class schedule I felt like I'd miss it by blinking.

Yeah, and the subject matter is going to be really awesome, so it'll be a class to get all brainiac in.

Wow, how interesting to be registered for two semesters instead of only the upcoming one!

Bon voyage!

Really? I know a lot of students in my Canadian undergrad who waited until much later to reg for the semester, but I've always liked registering for both semesters at the beginning of the whole school year.

Thanks!

It just wasn't possible, back when I was studying at a liberal arts college in New England. You could only register for the upcoming semester, not the one after that.

Must be differing systems then. That would make me really annoyed, not being able to register for the whole year!

Oh Jha, how exciting!!! Registering for courses is usually the most fun.

Three hours does sound like a long time. But I agree, all can fly by when there's classroom discussion on the *previous* lecture and when brains are not completely fried after a heavy lecture on Derrida. In my experience, there would be a break after each hour, and if there's a group discussion at the end of class, this time is used for looking at questions for discussion.

Depending on the student, some may actually prefer discussing concepts and questions concerning the day's lecture. I prefer spending a few days reading up on key texts before entering a two-hour tutorial. A better grasp of concepts (through reading) makes a more productive group discussion.

I'm so psyched like you wouldn't believe. I plan on going to the bookstore to get all the texts I need for my classes as soon as possible and start my reading before school starts next month.

You sound a lot like me before I started my MA!! I'd get excited and restrain myself slightly, but only so slightly from the book-buying enthusiasm. You will definitely discover MORE books you'd love to get for yourself throughout your degree. Trust me.

I'm sure. I've been shopping for bookshelves that I can take down and put back up myself, because when I move, I want to take the bookshelves with me to house the books. And there are a ton of books I need to read. Also, LIBRARY CARD. Also, ACADEMIC DATABASES ACCESS. YAY!

Oooo academia....

I'm so excited for you. Srsly. :D
