Nov. 20th, 2005 10:46 pmThis is my essay outline for my 16th Century Poetry and Prose class. I chose the primary reading of Sir Philip Sidney's Defense of Poesy as my subject, and firstly presented the Platonic elements of the Defense so well presented by Irene Samuel in the Influence of Plato On Sir Philip Sidney's Defense of Poesy.
Sidney's Defense
- the three arguments, in brief
Thesis: Poetry is still present and valid within spheres of contemporary culture.
ARGUMENT ONE:
Poetry is frivolous - quote from Sidney, and explain background of the quote.
- poetry has a place within politics and therapeutic sphere.
- poetry requires skill.
Intertextuality: 4 & 20 Blackbirds
- Poetry in graphic novels - Sandman
ARGUMENT TWO:
Poetry consists of lies - quote from Sidney, explain context of the argument.
Debunk: poetry has universal themes.
proof: adaptation of classical into modernity
Universal theme examples:
- I'll Be Missing You by Puff Daddy - give background: BIG's murder, Puff Daddy was BIG's protege, Faith Evans BIG's wife.
- ABBA, Money3 -
ARGUMENT THREE:
Poetry is immoral - quote from sidney, explain context: poetry holds influences, sways the passion, is irrational, thus dangerous to the Platonian republic.
debunk: Poetry persents a situation. Yezzi Moral authourity.
Blu Cantrell - Hit 'Em Up Style
- explain song, situation, solution (which is an alternative)
David Bowie - Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust
- explain album, theme, situation, consequences - could have alternatives, presents a hypothetical situation that is almost self-prophetic as it applies to Bowie's career after releasing the album.
