Because I'm bored and have nothing better to do, I thought I'd look up Disney songs on YouTube in different languages. Actually, I started from Nightmare Before Christmas, then Snow White, then Sleeping Beauty, and now I'm kinda stuck on Arabic translations.
Anyways, I found this song from the Aristocats and saw something I never noticed before:
Yeah, Mr. Siamese Cat - OMG RACIST! HELLO SLANTY EYES AND BUCK TEETH ON A CAT FROM ASIA! When I first saw it, I remember being a bit bemused, but now that I'm a bit more educated, I can see it's just FUCKING RACIST...... AND HILARIOUS! I probably shouldn't find it so hilarious, but I do. Maybe because I KNOW it's racist, and it's not like I can hold it against Disney; he probably didn't know any better then. Of course, they removed Sunflower from Fantasia's Pastoral Symphony, so should they remove the Siamese cat too? Hmmmmm. I don't know.
Anyway, there's also this little discussion on the Arabic version of Aladdin, related to this clip:
They're quibbling whether Aladdin's a Muslim and whether Aladdin is Arabic or not....
Okay, let's get this straight: Scheherazade first told the tale of the Arabian Nights, and SHE was an ARABIC princess. ALADDIN the story SHE told, she set in CHINA. SO ALADDIN IS ACTUALLY FUCKING CHINESE OKAY?? YELLOW AS SMOKE, BITCHES! The story of Aladdin is simply told by an Arabian princess, and the original setting of Aladdin is China. I think only Hallmark ever got this fucking straight! (Yes, Hallmark did a version of the Arabian Nights... framed them around Scheherazade trying to get her murderous husband to simmer down because there's a political conspiracy on his life, which actually didn't happen but it was cool for a mini-series, I suppose. It's actually really good. I highly recommend it.)
Checking out Sleeping Beauty "Once Upon A Dream" clips in different languages now. Prince Philip dancing in the woods in his socks never gets old.
