Am I the only one who thinks this is silly?

John Barrowman has revealed that he believes it is acceptable for men to cheat on each other.

The Torchwood star said that men's attitudes towards fidelity are different and homosexual relationships are more relaxed.

"When a guy strays and ends up with someone else, it's not a big deal... Sex for men is external. I think it's hard for women to realise this," he remarked.

Barrowman admitted that he continued to sleep around after meeting civil partner Scott Gill, despite knowing instantly that he was "the one".

"We saw each other casually for about a year, but before it got serious I had my fair share of wham-bam," he said.

The pair have been together for 15 years.

These attitudes don't happen in a vacumn. If it's okay for men to cheat, then it should be okay for women to cheat, too. The point is that men ALWAYS get this card of "it's in their nature" while we women have to suck it up and not do the stuff that will get the Men Of Our Lives mad.

It's not that "it's hard for women to realize this"; it's because due to the way our marriage institutions have been set up, it's detrimental for a woman to be left by a husband, particularly in light of the fact that so many women STILL have to depend on their husbands for economic stability. For those of us in more progressive areas, with the privilege of education and equal opportunity employment (heh), it's not such a big issue, but for many women around the world, this is STILL a life-affecting problem.

Men's attitudes towards fidelity is because men have never had that bind of sexual purity to worry about like women have been facing for several thousand years. Homosexual relationships are more relaxed precisely because of attitudes that favour men and sees their sexual freedom as a right rather than a luxury. This is not new; it's been around since the time of the Greeks.

Frankly, sex for me is pretty damn external too, and it's possible that his quote was taken out of context, but I still think it's irresponsible not to consider our cultural contexts which lead to these attitudes of "it's okay for guys to be assholes because that's the way guys are."
