jhameia: ME! (Default)
Good afternoon, everybody! Hope you all had a very Merry Christmas (if you go in for that sort of thing). Here are links for this week!

I'm going to see Princess and the Frog for the third time today, so here're a whackloadk of P&F-related links:
A Racialicious Dialogue on Princess and the Frog
Racialicious Interviews Lisa Price, founder of Carol's Daughter
Th's 2-Cents on the movie (she's only 5)
[personal profile] zahrawithaz has an indepth review, followed by a list of five stories that treat Diasporic African Religions better. Great stuff.
Another review on how the movie has soul, but it needs to consult its ancestors, and I agree with it.

[personal profile] sparkindarkness talks about apologies, ignorance, and condemnations.

Liberal MP calls for action to regular sex toys. I'm a bit suspicious, but then, it's regulating sex toys, not the use of them.

Molly at Paperfruit has something awesome to say to those fuckers who think there're getting to be too many women in science fiction.

Blag Hag reminds us: don't be sexy or guys have the right to randomly ejaculate on you.

figleaf talks about the scarcity of sex, and how it's really just a myth.

Transgriot reports on the first Transgender Beauty Pageant! Also, Monica Roberts on how "it ain't deception, we're living our lives," a reminder that transgendered people are, well, people.

In Pakistan, the Supreme Court ordered that the government officially recognize the hijra community, which includes transgendered people, transvestites, and eunuchs. Stupid that people have to identify their gender at all on a general ID card, but it seems to be more far-reaching than just gender, and towards the recognition of the hijra community to that basic human right of physical safety.

The Angry Black Woman points out, in all those digital frames being sold, the stock photos that come with the frame are usually white. It's like non-white folks don't buy these things, so there's no need to picture them. Also, she doesn't think the HP webcams, which can't find dark-skinned faces, are racist, but rather, the products of privilege. When you think about it, yeah, it's pretty facepalm-worthy, and definitely a product out of the racist infrastructure of our societies, but the webcams themselves?

Jessica Yee tells us what she's doing this Christmas, which sounds infinitely cooler than anything I've ever done for any holiday. But then, Jessica Yee IS made of cool, so...

This just in! Studies show that even on mute, shows can perpetuate racial bias! Ya don't say! Even so, a definite read, because it shows how insidious the whole perpetuation of bias is, and thus how necessary it is for media to take their writing seriously.

[personal profile] katta has some tips on how not to write deaf characters.

[profile] troubleinchina points out how we don't all live on Avenue Q, so kwitcher pretendin' and start actually engaging with the problems of disability.

At FWD/Forward, Este Yarmosh guest-posts about portrayals of disabilities in scifi films, like, for example, James Cameron's Avatar.

Wheelchair Dancer writes about charity: one person at a time and how we are more charitable only to "people we can identify with".

Moff wrote an awesome response to the "it's only a movie" argument. Hence, we now have Moff's Law.

Roy Disney, nephew of Walt Disney, dies, aged 79.

Let's talking about the morality systems of Star Trek vs. Star Wars. Yes, we are nerds. YES, I AM A TREKKIE.

Here's an annoying question: Should SF Die? Why do I always get the facepalmy-feeling of navel-gazing-ahoy-hoy when I read stuff like this?

Here is a list of Jewish comics. By "Jewish comics," it's either a comic by Jews or which has Jewish content. (There's something I read about what constitutes X literature, written about the Lambda Literary Awards but I can't seem to find it at the moment. Perhaps I need a Delicious.)

Japan has appropriated another Chinese classical novel, Jin Ping Mei, which is notorious for its sexual content, much like Lady Chatterly's Lover was in its day. Because I have a deep mistrust of people who filch, and thus a deep mistrust of most Japanese media, I've decided to nurse a deep abiding mistrust for this since it doesn't look like much more than historical porn.

My friend, Mike Perschon, the Steampunk Scholar, celebrates Year One of his Five Year Mission! Congratulations, Mike!

And that concludes this week's Sunday Linkfest! See you next week!
jhameia: ME! (Sparklez for Efferyvun!)
So, after seeing Princess and the Frog, I went to Chapters. I has loot. <3

Marvel 1602
Gail Carriger's Soulless
AND TWO BDB BOOKS! .... yeah, about time I caught up to you guys >_> I never read beyond the first one. I have Lover Eternal and Lover Awakened! I wish they stated where these books are placed in the series, though.
So yeah. Looking forward to digging into them. ^_^
