jhameia: ME! (Default)
Happy Sunday, folks! I've spent most of the week shuttling around to my parents' new house and IKEA and I'm just about ready to give up on buying furniture because I can't make a decision without my mother whaling down on me demanding why I have to do this instead of that and whatever.

So, onwards to links!

From The Pursuit of Harpyness:
Activism at the World Cup - the Argentine team paid tribute to the women's activist organization Abuelas de Plaza de Mayo. Lovely!
Do hypocrites have a right to privacy?

From Shakesville:
A discussion thread on the Defensive Condom, a condom which is supposed to dig itself into a man's penis who tries to rape a woman. It has to be removed by a doctor. I'm not down with walking around with a weapon in my vagina, but it might help other women. Anyway, go and see.
Afghanistan - how're things going there? Speaking of Afghanistan, here's a photo essay on how Afghanistan looked like in the 50s... which is to say, nothing like how it's portrayed these days as this locked-in-medievalism country.
Aussies, here's a thread on the Spill! Also contains a nice primer for us non-Aussies on what's going on.

From Racialicious:
Guest contributor Safa Samiezade’-Yazd on her hair issues as an Iranian.
Racism in "post-racial" America in the form of a doll.

From Tiger Beatdown:
Dirty Girls and Bad Feminists - this is actually a book review, but it contains a lot of really interesting ruminations on honesty, and facing our failures as allies and feminists. I found it strangely, sadly, relevant to me for the whole of the week.
Autonomy, on reasons to do social justice, as a response to this WaPo article on a woman who studies torture as a way of dealing with her abuse in childhood.
Crawling Out of Bed: Internalized Ablism and Privilege

From FWD:
A quick link on the relationship between disability and poverty.
Annaham wants to hear from folks on autobiographical comics and/or graphic novels that deals with disability, race, illness, gender, sexuality (non-fiction), adolescence (fiction or non-fiction), or how-to books.

From Feministe:
Isabel the Spy has a wonderful re-post on fat hatred and the little things people say that ruin self-esteem. She also has a brilliant new post on ADD and what the thought process is like for those living with it.

Harriet J on Fugitivus has a coupla things to say about gender essentialism and caring about what victims want.

From Internet trolls to real life - Ashelia shares her experience of a misogynistic troll who decided to stalk her in real life on the Borderhouse Blog.

TransGriot shares with us a tribute to the man who invented the IBM, Dr. Mark Dean. Who happens to be black.

An interview with a contestant from the reality show The Biggest Loser on how heinous it is off-camera.

Boston.com: the agony of a girl who just wanted to fit in - article on school bullying.

[personal profile] ephemere on revolution, the fight for justice, and how it's prevented by calls for politeness.

[profile] rhipowered's Fan's Primer to Not Fucking Up

mediaINDIGENA: Sorry is Right: The True Meaning of Canada's Apology

I will not go quietly - a list of fierce Chinese women in history!

The Feminist Breeder: Independent Women will be Cut - on how women who want to control how their childbirth will happen are frequently mocked or dismissed.

Yanoo News: Major Accident Cause: 11% Of Male Drivers Under 30 Distracted By Fondling Themselves While Driving - yea, you read that right.

Hey, PhD students! Here's a challenge for you: insert the sentence I SMOKE CRACK ROCKS into a peer-reviewed academic paper.

Finally, here's a lovely site for married Christian women who enjoy sex. I really love how its focus is on married women, and how they shed the stigma of loving sex.

That's it for this week! Hope you enjoy the links, and have yourself a good day!
