Sunday Linkfest!
Sep. 5th, 2010 02:31 pm Hi folks! I'm at home despite having scheduled a nude shoot today. Met the photographer last night and I started expounding on a lot of social justice issues and intersectionality theory. We need a bright sunny sky for infra-red photography, and today it's cloudy so the sunlight is a bit diffused, which is not ideal. So here I am instead with a linkfest!
Links in order of how I found them, mostly.
Househusbands in Japan contributing to gender equality?
Reading and Race: On Slavery in Fiction @ the Millions
Dork Tower ran a strip on how there are no black people in Warhammer games and a rebuttal of the criticism.
eHarlequin is looking for submissions! Check out their guidelines. h/t Jeannie Lin, whose book Taming of Mei Lin is out, and whose Butterfly Swords is coming out in October!
Brilliant Amptoon strip on street harassment.
Michele Lee on romance in scifi/fantasy @ Apex Book Company's blog
There was this Happy Meal Project in which someone took a picture of a Happy Meal left on a table every day for a year, and it pretty much looked the same throughout. Zuky responded to the "ew yuck" comments here and here and BFP lays it into assholes who criticise parents for feeding their kids MacD Happy Meals. Because she is awesome.
Saladin Ahmed on portrayals of Muslims in video games @ Escapist Magazine
s.e.smith on media critique of Lady Gaga @ Bitch Magazine
My friend cycads moved! No longer cycads, she goes by plain Alicia now, and blogs at Dove Grey Matter. Her latest posts include the women of film religi (religiously-themed films) and on respecting choice and contradictions. She also has some strong feelings about people who want to have a say on the niqab without having a Muslim background.
Latoya Peterson on the quest for the Great American Novel @ Racialicious.
Bizarrely, a school decided to segregate class elections by race. Kinda a misguided attempt at affirmative action.
Native women "disappear" in Canada @ Al-Jazeera.
Too Few Women in Tech? Stop Playing the Blame Game @ Fast Company
Brain exercises may slow down cognitive decline, but speed up dementia @ Science Daily (but what does this mean for us who constantly read intellectually/emotionally stimulating stuff like in the SJ sphere?)
Western Feminists' "Wounded Attachment" to the "Third World Prostitute" by Jo Doezema @ Commercial Sex Information Service. Written in 2000, printed in 2002, still relevant today.
1963 interview with Malcolm X from Playboy Magazine. I can't agree with everything he says, but this man does not pull punches.
Sady Doyle on the use of the Third Person in internet debate, particularly in relation to discussions of feminists.
A series In Defense of Links! Parts One, Two and Three @ Word Yard
White privilege when traveling / teaching abroad.
Families of Muslim victims of 9/11 are facing a new pain: Islamaphobia @ USA Today. Because it's so logical to lash out at families who also lost family members in 9/11 since they must be at fault 'cos they're Muslim.
Netherlands to close prisons for lack of prisoners.
Joy on hostage situations, or forcing your marriage partner to stay in the marriage as long as you can @ Feministe
The Last Bias: How & Why We Tolerate Gay Anti-Asian Prejudice @ Carnal Nation
On Feminism, Liberals, Black Folks, and Antoine Dodson @ Like a Whisper. Antoine Dodson's sister was almost raped in their low-cost housing home. He got some friends and they chased the rapist, who'd been targeting women in his area for a while now. They failed to catch the rapist, and Antoine Dodson, on TV, showed his outrage and a warning to the rapist out there. For this, white liberals and hipsters mocked him for failing to catch the rapist, remixed the interview to make a song out of it (from which they profited) and used it as an opportunity to mock black low-income people. You can see the original interview here.
To end on a more cheerful note, a sample chapter of N.K. Jemisin's The Broken Kingdom, sequel to Hundred Thousand Kingdoms!
