Sunday Linkfest!
Oct. 24th, 2010 10:10 amHi all! It's Sunday Linkfest time! Today I'm hoping the sky will NOT rain because I would like to go waterfall hunting with coursemates. I should have asked sooner but it just never occurred to me, and now it's definitely getting chillier out, so I want to go before it gets too cold. Also, next week NaNoWriMo starts!! I'm hardly prepared... I have three papers to write for the end of the semester, alas. Well, we do our best.
OK, I don't really know how to divvy up this week's linkfest by category, so we'll go by CRNT SRS BZNS to Neat Things and finish with Stuff W/Deadlines.
CRNT SRS BZNS:
What else? A linkspam of EMoon!Fail, or rather, the effects of EMoon!Fail:
Oct 17: Karnythia points out some stuff to the concom. Tempest comments on the developments.
Oct 18: NK Jemisin, who earlier had supported keeping Moon, then changed her mind, is now done with the concom herself. Shweta Narayan echoes the sentiment.
Oct 19: ithiliana points out that not all 2nd Wavers are older feminists. General comments from cypheroftyr. A letter from onceupon for WisCon to stop fucking up.
Oct 21: WisCon announces rescinding Moon's GoH status. Don't read comments. Yeloson on the difference between celebration and validation. NK Jemisin's thoughts on disinviting Moon. Yonmei recaps at Feminist SF Blog. Tempest tells off people who are indulging in hyperbole and rhetorical handwringing. Moniquill adds to the telling off. Ithiliana confirms that we are totes lefty communist queers! (OK, not really, but it was funny.) Cat Valente also has some thoughts, some of which I don't agree with (I don't believe in worrying about precedents).
Oct 22: Karnythia shares her experiences of being treated like a zoo exhibit at WisCon. Ithiliana has handy tips on how to identify whether anon comments are part of the WisCon community or not. Holzman-Tweed has a three-point review for people behaving badly.
Oct 23: An exquisite sentence-by-sentence deconstruction and takedown of Moon's original hate screed by Elf. Ithiliana lists the multiple AUs of WisCon floating on the Internetz, And a brief comment on how disinvite =/ silencing.
Whew! However did rydra_wong keep up with RaceFail?!?!
Somewhere, someone else was Wrong On The Internet, and I don't actually know the dude, and it happened on the Apex Blog, and since it was about quotas, I'm pretty sure it was totally ridic, especially coming from someone who's relatively unknown(?). Cat Valente and Jim Hines commented on this at length, and Apex had to release a Blogger Code of Conduct. Whoever dude is, what the hell, man, what the hell. Especially since Maurice Broaddus ALREADY covered why it's important to be vigilant about that kind of stuff, especially editors. This shit's been going on for years, okay? Especially since there are better ways of promoting yourself aside from posting ignorant screeds. I'm sorry for not having noticed it much, especially since I, too, blog for Apex!
Anyway, haters gonna hate, and haters want to hate on the new 99 animation because it features multi-ethnic Islamic superheroes. What the what? If you want to hate on it, how about the fact that in the animation preview, the animation and dialog are kind of stilted?
Haters still gonna hate, and pretenders pretend to love Antoine Dodson, and rape apologists will demand you cheer on your rapist because if you don't, you will hurt school morale, and be grounded. Otherwise, dudes will shoot you down for refusing them. Seriously, recognize your inner bigotry, people.
The Unneceasarean warns us: med students are performing pelvic exams on anesthetized patients. We know what this is, right? SEXUAL ASSAULT! And the only ones who can really change this are students, who have little institutional power.
Other good pieces of advice: Don't have too many exact expectations for how giving birth is going to go. Get acquainted with trans critiques of feminist theory. Give up your publishing dreams. Interrogate why building movements is so damn hard in the US. Question what we really know about politics. Explore e-publishing possibilities.
Image: A cybernetic dinosaur facing off a cyborg Hitler, with a topless zombie blond and Nazi flying jet skier/toboggans. It looks like it should be cover artwork for Boobieships and Titrockets. And speaking of cover artwork, here's a history of them featuring East Asians in comics! And while still on the theme of images, a model reproduces a Victoria's Secret ad for a disability awareness campaign and Bea Arthur's boobs are fundraising for breast cancer!
Neat things! Racialicious post on Grace Holloway of Bioshock 2. Share who you think should be a fictional feminist icon at the Harpyness. A bittersweet, yet heartwarming story from Melissa McEwan about reaching out. A poem on pick-up lines for feminists. Song mash-ups! Review of Jeff Vandermeer's Booklife. Revival of the oldest university in the world. A zine for people with chronic pain and their allies!
And a bunch of links relating to the African continent: Eccentric Yoruba on ancient African writing systems. A coin indicating link between China and Africa (no, really? History happens even without white people around? Wow!). A new look at democratizing agriculture, starting with actual farmers.
Odds and Ends: A thing on copyright and authorship. An interview with Maznah Mohamad on Malay privilege. A slideshow of money and faces. A new Coca-Coladildo vibrator bottle design.
Now for Things With Deadlines:
Rec paranormal / supernatural books with POC at BlackTeensRead2!
Artists, Radical Comics is having an illustration contest!
Call for Submissions:
The Monster Book for Girls, edited by Terry Grimwood, deadline 27 Feb 2011.
