Sunday Linkfest!
Oct. 31st, 2010 10:43 amHappy Sunday, all! Today's linkfest is rather thin and almost exclusively limited to DW and LJ.
But first! A Halloweeny story up at Fantasy Magazine! This is a reprint of Charlotte Perkins Gilman's story "When I Was A Witch" which both reflects her sociologist background (that led to her writing Herland) and the occasion. The ending's a bit blah, but everything else is brilliant!
Harry Connolly describes his agent hunt. Great soothing advice for agent-hunters all around.
Moar Moon!Fail links!
keeva: Lou Antonelli says "screw you" to fair journalism by interviewing only EMoon and not anybody else.
Saladin Ahmed's hopefully final thoughts on the WisCon/Moon fiasco
A look at US education-income correlation rates. Some great graphs, if you're into that sort of thing.
Karen Healey's terrific list of books she would read again and again, books she would love to read but haven't because it hasn't been written, and books she would be happy never to read again.
Speaking of reading books again, here's a re-read of Christopher Pike books complete with list of tropes and ratings!
W.C. Roberts Alert:
W.C. Roberts, who I'm not too familiar with, interviewed Rose Lemberg, editor of Stone Telling, to talk about the magazine and poetry. In comments she was immediately accosted by questions of a particularly dehumanizing manner. Turns out, this weird commenter dude is none other than WC Roberts himself! WC Roberts started deleting comments, but Shweta Narayan was totes on the ball, screencapping.
How does a hateful commercial banking on anti-Chinese Red Scare propaganda get made? An extra speaks out at Angry Asian Man.
An anti-Apple-application campaign. I don't quite trust Apple because of the control over content that they wield (I know, I know, this makes me sound like a dirty "no gummit!" libertarian)
Related to Steampunk Fortnight at Tor.com!
Holzman's very well-written guide for white folks on not failing.
Ay-Leen's wonderful personal essay on her ao dai and steampunk.
My piece on Commodification in Steampunk.
Nisi Shawl said something stupid way back when and we're so glad <3
Amal El-Mohtar wants to destroy steampunk. But with love.
Racialicious is holding its first ever blog carnival! Love, Anonymously wants to see PoC talking about sex!
unusualmusic has great commentary on a white couple who decided to renew their wedding vows in an eggszzotik Maldivian wedding ceremony and.... didn't exactly get what asked for.
eccentricyoruba ponders why it's okay to beat daughters but not sons.
I haven't linked to any of the FWDers recently and I really should because they just consistently bring the thoughtful, but here's Anna on accessibility being an everything problem, not an individual one.
Stephen Fry said something stupid, so trinker and tariq_kamal responded. Flavia at redlightpolitics has a different take. I for one think Fry was totes ridic and should have known better. That such an intelligent man should be so bamboozled by mainstream media? Shameful, Mr. Fry, shameful! Your poor long-suffering wife must be upset you'd think so low of her!
To end this on a lighter note, I CALL TO THEHORDE HERD to help fill this speculative fiction database with PoC-relevant material!
And a music video about an archaeologist's love affair with a mummy.
Today I'm off to a NaNoWriMo kick-off. Happy writing, those of you who are getting started already!!
