Hello, folks! This was a nifty week for me, what with the awesome response to Steampunk Nusantara, and work and stuff. So, before I get back to my writer-ly thing, I shall share the following links, under a cut, because apparently I'm no good at filtering awesome posts anymore...
The Harpies, bringing us awesome conversation on creepy old men who seem to seek permission to find young, newly-sexual girls attractive, because you know, women are never sexual for themselves,
Geek Feminism's post on the Jaime Lannister (have no idea who that is) vs. Hermione Granger cage match, where male observers relish violence on women (because wizards cannot possibly stand up to knights! Never mind that Hermione Granger is at her tender age already a powerful witch).
The Deviated Norm on philosophical musings about death, and this beautiful idea on polyamory and its effects on child-raising. The latter of course assumes a world where adults are adults who respect children rather than seeing children as possessions. Still, I think it's a beautiful vision. He also introduces himself and talks about his relationships, how they work, here.
Hoyden About Town! Because if you ain't read HAT yet, you should, cleverly re-writing a piece on mommy bloggers
Oh, earlier in the week, Australia became the first country to recognise non-specified gender on birth certs. And then this was revoked. WTH, OZ? D:
Renee at Womanist Musings on Claudia Jones, the black Irish who are not recognized as white and thus still face the discrimination Irish folk faced back then, and how advertising for world tours fail so many Bingo Cards.
Cara at the Curvature on how abusive men overestimate the rate at which other men abuse, which enables them to justify what they do. Also, on how a judge ruled that the daughters must have overnight visits with their father WHO IS A SEX OFFENDER. D: D: D:
How the War on Drugs gave birth to a permanent American undercaste. A disturbing read.
Star Wars was uncannily based on an Icelandic Saga! OMG.
A discussion on Final Fantasy and the ethnicity of FF characters. Go get your geek on.

yeloson, an interesting link on how knowing their family history can help kids cope with growing up. I find this quite true, but that's just my experience.
Jo Tamar says, "Rape is not kinky" and of course she's right.
FWD/Forward on tasting fear and free speech.
Restructure! on how purported Canadian multi-culturalism displaces anti-racism and upholds white supremacy.
Our fab
divabat on Bai Ling, every bit as weird as Lady Gaga.
An old post, but one I thought I'd resurrect, on the concept of kyriarchy. The term has caught on in the feminist blogosphere, especially with the advent of intersectional analysis, and I'll be writing about it soon as well.
WOMEN BUY MORE MOVIE TICKETS THAN MEN. WHERE ARE OUR MOVIES, HOLLYWOOD SHITHEADS?
Vancouver's Asians feel neglected by Olympics.
A post on how diversity matters, and a great examination of privilege and bias.
yeloson on people whining "You're being meeeaan!"
Meloukhia on internet bullying and how professional lives are affected by it.
Monica Roberts the Transgriot: I don't have anything to be ashamed of.
Melissa McEwan of Shakesville has a proposal.
Fay Ann Lee made an indie movie because no one would give her funding unless she changed the script to not feature her Asian-American main character. Read about it here.
dmp got to see it. I am insanely jealous. ;_;
Zetta Eliott on decolonizing the imagination. Nothing
deepad hasn't already covered, but I thought it was a great article.
Stuff White People Do: Play the ethnicity card.
figleaf of Real Adult Sex on an authentically pro-life position on healthcare reform.
Sady of the Tiger Beatdown on this hubris-filled movie, 500 Days of Summer which you absolutely MUST read. An excerpt:
Puppies deliver new purpose to prisoners. This made me go AAWW.
Some calling-out of white trans*folks and queer folk to please quite using the "Two Spirit" concept to describe themselves, because that's cultural appropriation.
Here are some various links which are tangentially related to the Victorientalism issue, but nonetheless interesting reading:
A response on how historical inaccuracy should still have its logical conclusions.
One on Japonisme in cinema
On Indo-chic
On Orientalism which I already posted but is too good.
A post giving an analogy of cultural appropriation using geek culture
And now! Webcomics! Virtuoso, an alternate-history Africa, and "The West Was Lost" which centers Native American characters in a post-apocalypse setting.
And finally, this AWESOME concept: the sOccket. Basically, you kick this ball around and that generates and stores electricity. Then you can plug stuff in. Can you imagine the effect this will have on places that don't get regular electricity?! No wonder we call football the Beautiful Game. AND IT IS WORLD CUP YEAR.
Happy Sunday!

Stuff White People Do: Play the ethnicity card.
figleaf of Real Adult Sex on an authentically pro-life position on healthcare reform.
Sady of the Tiger Beatdown on this hubris-filled movie, 500 Days of Summer which you absolutely MUST read. An excerpt:
(500) Days of Summer is, to be brief, the story of Joseph Gordon-Levitt meeting, kissing, fucking, and continuing to fuck Zooey Deschanel, whilst Zooey Deschanel tells Joseph Gordon-Levitt continuously that he is Not Her Boyfriend. Then she says the fucking has to cease, and she seems not to feel too bad about that, and he is like, “BUT I AM YOUR BOYFRIEND!!!???” And she is like, no you’re not. And then he is sad.
We are encouraged to infer, from this series of events, that Zooey Deschanel is LITERALLY A MONSTER.
