jhameia: ME! (Sparklez for Efferyvun!)
I'm leaving for Singapore today at 2pm, so I figured I better get this in before I pack up my laptop.

Went to a wedding dinner last night. My dad's known the father of the bride since childhood, and I used to be pretty close to her younger sister. I don't particularly care for the bride herself nor her groom, but there's no reason to not go. I like most of her paternal relatives, and she has an aunt in Canada and an artist uncle, so it was nice to catch up with them after not seeing them for years.

Also, I finished my Sookie Stackhouse books. I have no more reason to put off reading Windup Girl, so I'll be reading that on the bus ride down today.

An editorial cartoon Lalo Alcaraz drew about Sotomayor. It's really sweet.

atlasien tells us about the dangerous desire to adopt Haitian babies, particularly the race and class privilege involved.

[livejournal.com profile] sparkindarkness reminds us that the right to vote does not supersede another's right to exist.

Happy Blog Birthday to the ladies of the Harpyness!

A 3rd of women in the US Military service have been raped. How exactly is a military service supposed to protect the people if it cannot even protect its own?

Meloukhia on security theatre.

Chromatic Harry Potter.

Signal Boost: New Fairy Tales needs a new assistant editor.

Remember the "women-only clinic" that discriminated against trans women? Well, turns out they are now accepting trans women. Very quietly. Which is a plus, I guess.

Recently, Clay Shirky puzzled over why women didn't overestimate themselves when talking about themselves the way men do, and recommended women do so, ignoring the fact that a) women are punished for doing so and b) lying about how great you are isn't exactly a good thing to emulate. Sady Doyle takes a different tack, talking about how girls trash each other anyway, as a way of policing themselves and making themselves look better in the eyes of the patriarchy.

A new thing at Shakesville: Shakesfilk! Basically, re-writing a well-known song into satire. The first one re-writes "Somewhere over the Rainbow" into "Somewhere Absent of Rainbows", a riff on homophobia.

Introductory Thoughts on the Cult of Busy.

Whatever Happened to Rufio: The Non-Asian Ideal of Masculinity, talking about how Asian males are rarely idealized in North American media. Funnily enough, I was thinking about this yesterday, and then at the wedding, met one of the hottest guys I know who happens to be Asian.

Did any of you guys see the movie Amreeka? It's about an Arab family that moves into America just a little after 9/11, and awkwardness ensues. The main focus is on a mother-son relationship though, which I thought was neat, and made me want to see it, but no one wanted to come with me. Anyway, Racialicious interviewed Cherien Dabis, the woman behind Amreeka.

A depressing read that really illustrates how rapists are fucking sociopaths that need to be locked the fuck up, no matter how functional they are in society.

Looks like Shakesville has to have a Mansplainer Thread after all!

Want Ad for A Feminist Revolution: Part 1

There's a new scifi short movie coming out of Kenya, called Pumzi, and what can I say? It looks really awesome! Here's a trailer:
