Hi folks! I have to work on a presentation on Tuesday, and then embark on paper-writing for the rest of the month. Sorry I missed last weekend! I was in California for Nova Albion -- con report forthcoming!

So, some signal boosts first:

Kids at Lifting Voices are putting together a coffeetable book of their food histories and need some funding!

Strange Horizons is looking to extend their pool of reviewers to include more women-identified, POC, queer, etc folk!

Call for submissions to Pot Luck #2, a food blog carnival! This issue's theme is "Comfort Food" and hosted by Stephie Penguin at Vegan About Town!

The head of Statistics Canada, Munir Sheikh, quit his job after the Conservative government cancelled the mandatory census and opposition MPs accused the agency of "manufacturing a crisis".

Rutgers pays Snooki of Jersey Short $2000 more to speak about fashion tips than Toni Morrison for delivering a Commencement Address. Nice to know where your priorities are, Rutgers.

Old post from Claire Light on the word "hapa": what it originally meant, how it was appropriated.

Mohawk author Taiaiake Alfred asks, why play the white man's game by voting in the system that'll discount Native Americans anyway?

Alas, My Little Pony has a racist little cowboys vs. Indians episode. Sanguinity lays down what's wrong with the tropes used in the ep.

Here, have some tips on sex etiquette from the Quran.

Huffington Post Johann Hari points out that people don't actually panick that much, or fall to pieces completely, when a crisis strikes. They're more often likely to come together.

You've seen that video of the cute little loris holding an umbrella? It's, sadly, part of an illegal trade, and gone through suffering. Tell the kids you know that just because something is cute, doesn't make it a pet!

Feminist Philosophers has a list of reasons why women would turn down conference invitations.

The Hathor Legacy has a review of Sucker Punch, which is intriguing and very different from other reviews I've seen. Also, a lovely how-to on supporting a friend who has been sexually assaulted.

This is what abortions REALLY remove, and it ain't baby-like.

The Rumpus has thought-provoking advice for someone writing in about handling jealousy.

The Sailor Moon manga will be re-released soon. Here's a post about how and why Sailor Moon is a truly feminist manga (and different from the cartoon, which was written by men) and trumpeted Girl Power even before the Spice Girls, celebrating girliness and heroism that doesn't rely on masculinity.

Jaded16 on triggers, and a conversation between quixotess, liqournspice, and blackamazon on how white feminists use their triggers as a way to escape accountability towards racialized feminists.

Thursday of Weekday Blues lays down the law.

Jessica Verday wrote a story with two gay protagonists, and the editor wanted it changed because she wasn't sure the publishers would be okay with it. So Ms. Verday pulled out of the anthology instead, because being gay should be okay, even in a mainstream commercial antho.

GeekFeminism points to BioWare's awesome response to a complaint that Dragon Age II isn't "straight male gamer friendly".

gategrrl has a plea to Mythbusters for more girl air-time.

Pixar is making its first female-led movie, called Brave.

A blog called Bangable Dudes in History. You're welcome.

Jeff Vandermeer announces a new imprint! Well-known names from the steampunk community make a cameo!

A picture from Scott Westerfeld's upcoming book, Goliath: Alek on a Clanker machine busting into a wedding that's getting his best friend Dylan (really Deryn masquerading as a boy) married off to a girl who looks like Lilit from Behemoth. Count Volger facepalms in the background while Dr. Barlow pats his arm reassuringly. Bovril the perspicacious loris runs away in panic. Hilarity looks like it will ensue. It's probably an April Fool's joke, but it's still a hilarious picture! I am SO hoping for a Volger/Barlow pairing like you wouldn't believe.

Hope you have a happy week ahead!
