When I first moved to this building, I was told by the super at the time, Joyce, tht caged animals were fine. Therefore guinea pigs, hamsters and the like were okay. Not bird, not bunnies. So I had a hamster, and that was cool. Joyce was an elderly-ish lady, maybe about sixty or so. The current super, Laura, is about the same age.
When I moved in, I said to my roommate, "I'm going to ask Joyce about vacumn cleaners, she would know best how to deal with these floors."
My roommate replied, "What for? I'm sure she's got better things to do than talk about vacumn cleaners."
"It's not just about vacumn cleaners. It's about being nice and making sure the landlady knows you."
My roommate, who doesn't believe in asking for help and prefers to do things independently, disagreed either way, and I went on my merry way. When we finally decided to move to separate units, Joyce said, "I'm going to write you a glowing recommendation!"
So I've got a good record on Realstar records for now.
Laura I liked a little less than Joyce. She was a lot more bureaucratic, and her husband, Stan, wasn't as quick to get things done the way Joyce's husband, Sylvester, was. (Sylvester woke me up at 6am to help me move my bed and couch.) Still, I smiled and did my "be nice to the old ladies" thing, and I attended the luncheon that welcomed Daphne (the super that replaced Joyce, and Laura's relation). I was the only young adult there in an entire room of seniors, but it was okay. I helped out by washing dishes and handing out food and tea, so the old ladies liked me.
I never really thought Laura saw me as anything more than just another tenant in the apartment. I paid my rent, said hello, did my thing. Somehow, I got the feeling that she didn't like me there because I'm a student, and while certainly students live there (as well as short term tenants working at the nearby hospital), sometimes you know people of an older crowd prefer others of the same age.
Either way, when I told Laura my plans on moving out, she was understanding, because rent IS getting higher in my apartment, but she said, "I'm going to miss having you around!" I explained, "but I have pets, and you don't allow pets here." "Well, nobody knew!"
Anyway, as I said, I was having trouble. Garden Park won't allow my animals, and I asked the property manager why. Turns out that although she allows dogs and cats, she limits the animals to just those because her supers have them. She would rather have no animals at all, but she doesn't have that option for the time being. She let me go from the lease anyway, but that means I was halfway packed with nowhere to go!
Laura and Roseanne (the super who replaced Daphne) have already started showing my apartment, and Roseanne asked me, "so where're you going?" to which I could only say, "Nowhere, actually. Turns out the apartment I was supposed to go to won't let me have my animals." I was still a good host anyway, and pointed out the key features of the apartment - where the plug points are, tv, phone jacks, and told everyone who came in that from my apartment, you can watch the Festival of Lights from a distance, hear some concerts from the Jazz Festival, and see cruise ships coming into the harbour. Basically, I'm advertising the place like crazy.
Roseanne must have told Laura of my problem, because I got a call this morning and Laura told me, that if I wanted to change my mind, I better do it soon, and just give her a letter explaining that I'm not moving out yet. She's willing to let my animals stay, as long as I kept them in my apartment.
I'm really very grateful to her, of course, and I really didn't want to trouble her this way. Even if I do stay, I'll get pressure from my dad to move because whether I like it or not, this place is still fairly expensive. I got in touch with a property manager who loves animals, and she caters to students. She has a place available immediately, but it's really small apparently, so she asked me to wait until she got back into the office so she could check her records for what she's got.
In the event that I have to wait until another month to find a place, it's not a big sacrifice. I'll just stay here, unpack my shit and see what happens.
I'm really glad that I built good relations here though. It really doesn't hurt to be nice to people who may not meet all your standards, and help comes through at surprising times!
Wish me luck in finding a good place to stay that'll save me some money!

Date: 2007-06-11 06:19 pm (UTC)I'm glad you're keeping the pets and having success with the landladies! That's ridiculous that any place would allow cats and dogs but not caged animals. Anything that stays in a cage is so clean and quiet, no one would know that you had them!

Date: 2007-06-11 11:07 pm (UTC)It's great living here... a lot of the residents are older folk as well, so sometimes it's like talking to this sweet little grandmother, and it's just really nice. ^^ And yeah! The only times my chins make noise is at night when the lights are off, and it's not even noise you can hear out of the apartment!
