A while back on Tumblr, I posted about my friend, Yuki Choe, who is in dire need of funds. She’s a Malaysian-Chinese trans woman who has done HUGE advocacy work demanding the recognition of transsexual and transgender people. She’s recently burned bridges with the local GLBTQ associations for her burning criticism of their ineffectual work.

Her PayPal address is yuki.choe@yahoo.com, btw.

In my last post, I asked ya’ll to donate what little you can, even $5 is okay, due to the exchange rate.

So far, Yuki has received RM100. Given the exchange rate? That’s USD $32.

So far she’s been unable to line up another job.

She needs to

  • pay rent: this month’s and last month’s
  • get food
  • pay car installments
  • get meds: not just hormones, but meds for depression too

Her PayPal address is yuki.choe@yahoo.com, btw.

She has been practically abandoned by the local gay community and can’t go home because her family doesn’t know how to deal with her being trans. She also has mental health issues and is suicidal. She doesn’t want to die, AFAIK, but she doesn’t know how she can survive either.

I know nobody on Tumblr knows her well, not even I, and you’re frankly under no obligation. You probably won’t get back anything, either. But Yuki needs to survive the next couple of months in order to get a new job.

Her PayPal address is yuki.choe@yahoo.com, btw.

PLEASE SPREAD WIDELY. Post to your other blogs, post to Twitter, anything!

Alternately, you can email her: yuki.choe@yahoo.com. Advice, words of encouragement and support, are all welcome.

PLEASE DONATE! I suggested USD$2,000 the other day, which would be ideal, but a minimum of $1,000 is needed if she is to survive the next month. She currently only has $USD32 from my last drive, so she can get some food.

Her PayPal address is yuki.choe@yahoo.com, btw.

Please help!!!!

I don't know if you've already done this, but a good way to signal-boost is copperbadge's Radio Free Monday. Every Monday he does a post about charitable causes or information, and he has about 3,000 blog subscribers.

I know her. Don't know if it's too intrusive, but may I ask what happened that made her burn bridges with the GLBT community and why they've abandoned her?

She wrote a post that criticised the GLBTQ community for being ineffectual (http://kakakkilljoy.wordpress.com/2011/07/25/so-what-is-wrong-with-the-malaysian-lgbt-movement-for-sexual-rights/), basically. And a lot of people took offense. Right now pretty much no one is talking to her, whether outright snubbing her, or just avoiding associating with her to save face with the larger community.

Uuuuugh, that is so gross. I think that's most upsetting is how common it is, too. =/

(It's a good post.)

Yeah. =( I'm... not exactly surprised? But am disappointed all the same. That's why I'd rather appeal to strangers on the internet I know than appeal to them. Could you spare a few yourself? I'd really appreciate it!

To be fair, a few people commenting on the blog entry doesn't make the 'LGBT community'. But I can understand your reasons for not alerting the 'LGBT community' first.

This is true. And for all I know, maybe she's overestimating how much people at large are rejecting her, because of her low self-esteem. Thanks for your support.

I sent some money her way. Keep us updated on how she's coping.

I don't know how open these communities are but it's worth a shot -- even though it might be worse if she gets turned down. I know Kechara House is pro-LGBT and as a religious community they do a lot of charity work. There's also the gay-friendly church -- I really forgot its name -- which she might want to try for too. Maybe she can give these organizations a call and ask if there's anywhere she can turn to for help.

Thanks for this. Let me know the church's name when you can? (She was in training to be a pastor at some point.)

She would have heard of this I think: Good Samaritan MCC.

Yeah, I'm still kinda pissed at the reception. I'm sure there were some people who agreed, but won't speak out. Same thing happened to Tiara a while back, too.
