I went to an on-campus talk about the OccupyMovement, brought up some issues with racism and discussed the sexual assaults, and some young 19 year old kid challenged me to "prove it".

You'd never believe what happened! A dude actually stood up to him and told him to back down. I was really impressed. I mean, overall the experience was good, but "prove it"? really?

That is indeed very impressive! I remember something similar in Halifax too--doing the MND production one of the actors suggested one of the fairies struggle with the strongman fairy we had for Mustardseed, "because women struggling is hilarious!" and the director was very pro about it, and was like "ok, let's give it a go" and after that said, "actually, you know what? That's actually DISTURBING, let's not do that." And we carried on.

But yeah, REALLY? Why does that intervention even need to happen? >:{

Thanks for that link. Two of my friends wrote this Letter to Male Activists. There's also this post about privilege in an occupation.

Also, massive UGH to "occupy a vagina" and the sexual assaults. Dammit, so-called radical men, stfu and stop perpetuating the kind of institutional oppression you get so het up about when it doesn't restrict your ability to perve on women. And if I hear someone bleat "no war but class war" again, I will not be responsible for my actions.
