Sunday Linkfest!
Aug. 30th, 2009 03:03 pmFugitivus has a riposte regarding comments from the discussion on how people don't get to blame rape victims when society puts these failsafes in place for rapists to operate, especially with those people who say Good Thing I Don’t Put Up With That Shit.
The good people at Geek Feminism talk about why documenting geek sexism is important: otherwise, it becomes invisible and the pattern is simply not seen, or it's seen as an abberation rather than an on-going phenomenon.
Feminists with Female Sexual Dysfunction has a response to
Marcella Chester talks about the mindset of guys who do their best to change a woman's "no" into a "yes".
Meanwhile, Cara of the Curvature points us to a horrifying case in which a rapist who drugged and raped a woman was deemed not pathologically dangerous and merely committing a crime of opportunity. This happened in British Columbia, CANADA.
From the Guy's Guide to Feminism, a post about masculine privilege: The mistake some guys make is that they confuse a large cultural norm with a critique of their own personal behavior. This confusion tends to occur in a knee-jerk sort of way to guys who’d like to consider themselves (often rightfully so) sensitive and bright.
Here's one of the first few articules on Lizzi Miller, who is making waves because she's posing comfortably in a picture where her paunch is clearly showing. It's old hat by now, but in the comments, the editor of Glamour has been overwhelmed with the positive responses, and I quote: As a magazine editor, I have no interest in promoting the "female fear of inadequacy" you talk about (there's enough of that out there); I want readers to feel better, not worse, about themselves, their bodies and their lives after buying Glamour. And when we read the thousands of letters and comments on a picture like Lizzi's, you better believe that makes us want to do more and more and more of it!
We'll have to hold her to it.
More in the magazine world, I just discovered Filament Magazine, dedicated to erotica that caters to the Female Gaze. Porn for women, by women... of men. Yay!
Still with magazines, Bitch Magazine interviewed Shira Tarrant, authour of Men and Feminism and editor of Men Speak Out. She also happens to be an editor of Fashion Talks, in which
There's a compilation of Mindblowing SF by Women going on. Go contribute or go check out who's been nominated! Yes, women do write mind-blowing SF. Fuck you, Paul di Fillipo and Mike Ashley. There is also a compilation thread of Mindblowing SF by PoC.
Speaking of PoC in popular media, here's a post on how PoC get erased from movies, every so often.
Still on the subject of movies, here's a list of uncomfortable plot summaries.
Further afield in the pop culture world, Madonna got booed for defending gypsies and gays in Bucharest, Romania! WTF! Her social activism cred totally got boosted though.
Finally, an article discussing the difference between diversity and culture, and how culture involves ideology, so therefore, Canada's not really a multi-cultural society.
Oh, and a Merdeka Day post, of course.

Date: 2009-08-30 06:58 pm (UTC)That link is hilarious. Some of those summaries are priceless e.g.
- "TITANIC: Crazy old widow disregards lifelong memories of husband, children, and grandchildren in favor of that one time she fucked a bum."
- "SPIDER-MAN: Nerd gets bitten by spider, complains about how this ruins his life for years to come." (this one is SO true)
- "BEAUTY AND THE BEAST: Peasant girl develops Stockholm Syndrome." (Never looked at it that way, so LOL!)
oh... erm ... ahem ... happy merdeka day ...
