jhameia: ME! (Sparklez for Efferyvun!)

It is Sunday again! I have accomplished not much this week, as usual, but I have gathered many links for you to enjoy! Well, maybe not enjoy, but hey.

First, this fantastic post on the propaganda of people who cry "political correctness!" when told they should quit doing something. It goes indepth into the origins of the phrase (which is really different from what we think of it today!) and how it's used without being examined. Really interesting stuff!!

[livejournal.com profile] kiwi_grrl sticks her neck out to say, "Yes, Obama sending troops into Afghanistan is the right thing." Or at least, not a bad thing. Thought-provoking questions about culpability and responsibility.

Wheelchair Dancer analyses how a disabled artist is used as an experiment, and how the medical model of disability still trumps the social model.

There's some dude comparing Afghanistan to a special needs child. WTF? Afghanistan is not a "special needs baby". That's insulting to the country, and its patronizing tone is insulting to special needs children and their parents.

An NHS ambulance had to take care of a suicidal 14-yr-old for several hours because no hospital would take her in. The NHS is pretty awesome compared to here, but even wrt mental health, the hospital system can still fail.

Cripchick talks about the need for both the reformist and the radical.

The brain is still a giant mystery.

Remember the Method Soap Bubbles affair? Some completely-unrelated-to-Method marketing dude said, "Stop looking for offense.". Melissa says, FUCK YOU:
[The advice to "get over it"] is a cruelty that also conveniently ignores the reality that imagery of sexual assault can be triggering for survivors. Despite what the editors of Ad Age evidently believe, survivors of sexual assault who are triggered by its imagery used as a joke are not just weak-minded reactionaries. They are survivors of a heinous crime who don't find the "humor" in its being used as a metaphor for soap scum.

It doesn't stop there. AdRants weighed in on the controversy, and the writer gave a list of things that he thinks should happen. It includes outlawing cause groups and feminist blogging, and "hopefully they'll die and allow the rest of us to 'use the loofa' without feeling like we're being gang raped in the shower." Liss is again awesome: "You've just gotta love a guy who uses sexual assault imagery in a post contending that survivors of sexual assault (and their allies) are hysterical reactionaries."

The more this happens, the more I think gender studies for kindergartners are a good idea. But is it really?

At Gender Across Borders, an article on how clothing can be used as a tool against assault. Why didn't anybody think about this before!

Lauredhel at Hoyden About Town gives us three examples of rape culture manifesting in Nice Guy™-ism over breast cancer activism.

dumi at Uptown Notes muses about the word "ally" and "feminist" as a black man. It's very interesting, this question, on whether men can be feminists or only allies, or both, and which one should they be really? It's kinda a question that isn't really important to me, but at the same time, there is always the fine balance - yes, men can be feminists, but at the same time, historically, when men get in on a movement, they inevitably end up dominating it. Difficult question.

In Boston, a senator cancels his presence at the Clover Club, which is historically a men-only club. Turns out he would have declined if he had known beforehand of the men-only thing. Pretty nifty.

On a more personal level, figleaf at Real Adult Sex talks about how the person doing the domestic duties is generally taken for granted, and it's not necessarily a gender thing.

Remember the trans teen who got that transphobic phone call from a MacDonald's manager? She is totally suing. Good for her, I say.

[livejournal.com profile] sparkindarkness talks about internalizing homophobia.

Latoya Peterson has something to say about those stupid "I Guess I'm A Racist" ads on the healthcare debate.

On the bright side, a transsexual woman is Women of the Year 2009 in Argentina!

Burqa Barbie has been creating quite a stir!

Audacia Ray presents to us a video about SANGRAM, a sex worker rights organization in India. Very cool watch. If you have no audio, Shakesville has a transcript.

An interesting study on how pride in one's own racial identity can affect depression rates positively. h/t [livejournal.com profile] yeloson

Disney's Princess and the Frog is out!! Here's a fairly negative review, but if the discussion over at [livejournal.com profile] foc_u is any indication, it is still totally worth watching. Who wants to go with me and [livejournal.com profile] lovely_lici to watch this?! :D So excited!

The hymen has been renamed to "vaginal corona". Kinda interesting! Scarleteen has more. ^_^

Here's an interesting post on the issue about writers' pay rates. I don't completely understand it, seeing as I'm coming in on the tail-end of the discussion, but it's worth a read if you're in the writing industry. Also of interest, [livejournal.com profile] catrambo on finding markets for stories.

Talulah Mankiller would like to talk to you about her special bathroom time.

Here are pictures of the various ethnic minorities in China.

The first German steampunk LARP! With pretty pictures!

I'm still waiting to hear about, well, anyplace that isn't composed largely of failium alloys when it comes to mental health. :P

Of course, children who went to schools based on the British education system calls it by it's proper name, Failuminium.

I'm increasingly convinced that attitudes about mental health haven't really improved since sometime in the mid-60s for most people, and are still stuck firmly in the mid-20s for far too many others.

The Figleaf "domestic duties" thread is "Page not found." Let me know if/when you find it, because I'd love to read! Thanks for continuing to post links that challenge. It's taken depressingly long, but I see a gradual (positive) change in my attitudes on all sorts of subjects thanks to the blogs you share that I wouldn't have seen otherwise.

It's typoed; there's a " at the end of the link that shouldn't be there.
