I went down to Singapore to have lunch, tea, and a fish spa session with [livejournal.com profile] jolantru and let's just say it was fabulous. We are going to have a fish-off, that is to say, we're both going to write shorts featuring fish spas.

I freaked out on Monday realizing that my MRP final is due on the 24th not the 28th, and freaked out thinking it was due on that day. Dad laughed at me because Monday was the 22nd. And since then i have discovered I've been doing MLA bibliographies ALL WRONG FOR THE LAST FIVE YEARS /o\

--

Dad and I went shopping yesterday. I have three new pairs of jeans! One of them is corduroy!

--

I have just sent off the MRP final to my supervisor, my second reader (who is moving to Carleton University, which I'm kinda mad about; her husband couldn't get spousal hire here at Mac but did at Carleton, so now she's leaving! The only South Asian prof in the department! Grr), and the secretary.

--

I also just sent off an abstract to this anthology and hopefully I get accepted.

--

I now want to send off an abstract to this conference because it sounds awesome and also because it's in Halifax. Might tackle the occult aspect of Lancers (UGH at least this RACIST text is giving me a lot of mileage) and contrast it against the supernatural aspect of Gaslight Dogs.

Why do US universities require applicants to do the GREs even at post-grad level?

--

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAa no time to print and bind MRP before I get back to Hamilton AAAAAAAAAAAAAA

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAa flying off tonight to China and then to Tibet and back on the night of the 3rd and flying off on the night of the 4th AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

--

The trip to China will be crowded. Apparently a lot of Chinese tourists will be crowding there because a) China closed off Tibet for a while because Tibet did something to offend the Chinese government, for June and July, so a ton of Chinese tourists are all "gonna make up for it now!" and going at this time. b) Also, apparently this is the time of year Tibetans bring down the walls of their tents and then you can see their carpets, or something, and Chinese tourists think this is a big deal.

"So, the Chinese are crowding in to watch Tibetans air their rugs?" I asked my dad.

"Yeah. Weird huh?"

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA MUST GO PACK NOW AGAIN

Re. GREs, we call it graduate school, not postgrad, in the US, if that makes the terminology make more sense? It does seem like on a Ph.D. level acceptance should be based on something other than standardized testing, yes. What I had trouble understanding was why one has to take the math section to get into Ph.D. programs in English literature. Guess what I spent most of my time studying for in GRE prep? Well, to be fair, the verbal and logical were pretty much identical to the LSATs, which I'd already taken, so that came back very quickly.

Er, I know it *is* based on something other than standardized testing, but yes, it does seem standardized testing is an odd criterion at that level.
