Since every career depends on publication, it follows that the quantity published has been increasing rapidly since the 1960s when one article on kinship ties in Beowulf was enough to secure a life journey through academia. [My emphasis -- JAB]

I found the absolutism of the above sentence intensely amusing in the context of my own academic career...

Just so you know -- I have read my books, all 5000-odd, and they in turn represent only a fraction (albeit perhaps the larger fraction) of all the books I have read. Of course, I've been at it for well over half a century, now, and I'm by way of being a "three-pack-a-day" kind of reader -- it's part of why the rest of my life is such a mess, more often than not... but in general it is well to choose your addictions from amongst those that are admired and envied rather than despised and pitied...
