I've been doing quite a bit over the last couple of weeks:
- Publishers Marketplace announced Rose Lemberg's novella sale to Tachyon, and I'm the editor for the project! I'm hoping the feedback I give on it will really help. I need to earn that Associate Editor title.
- I'm struggling to write a review of an anthology. Part of it (well, a major part of it) has to do with reading it on the phone and I find myself at a loss reviewing something that I can't thumb through easily. I'm not sure what the fix is. I think the ebook revolution is great for like quick reads but for those of us who want more engagement with the work, paper works are still a must.
- I'm also struggling to get started on the new novel, an Asian fantasy romance. I've got the outline ready and I'm re-reading old drafts to see what I can salvage.
- My old laptop died, after five years of dissertation writing. I'm still thinking about sending it in to Asus to see if I can get it fixed, because it seems to be a motherboard issue. The rest of the keyboard is just fine. But it might just be an unnecessary expense? I also bought a new HP Pavilion 360 for about ~$800 (that's computer, plus MS Office software, plus antivirus, plus 1 year of Geek Squad help). I'm still getting used to the keyboard--it's deeper than the Asus, which I hadn't anticipated being a problem, and the up and down keys on it are way small. The keys are nice and wide though, and I like the size (10") better than the larger ones.
- I'm trying out OneNote for writing my draft, rather than the old way of using multiple Notepad files (LOL).
- I sucked it up and bought a domain! http://jaymeegoh.com is now a thing! It still needs work--I need to put in links to all the interviews I've done and a press kit, but the bare basics are up.
- I went to the SF Tea Festival last weekend! It was a lot of fun, and I bought a bit of tea. Mostly I went to hang with folks, and afterwards we all went to
ladyjax's place for food.
- I performed last night! I wrote a short piece of utopian fiction for F&B: Voices from the Kitchen after being scouted on Twitter. I was the only science fiction writer in the lineup of memoirs and personal essays and someone had a piece about tea. There was a lot of food at the event too, since the organization putting it on is an incubator for entrepeneurs to start restaurants in the Bay area, particularly immigrant women.
The event was at Brava Theater, which I'd passed by a few times already but never went in. It's an Art Deco venue that focuses on Latin@ events.
Fran came as my plus one, and there was a reception beforehand with pupusas, and an afterparty at the restaurant of one of the graduates of the incubator's program, a really interesting Indian restaurant.
- On a whim, I got on the Antioch line to go to Rockridge, where Safeway is, and there's also a Trader Joe's nearby. I sometimes walk to Safeway when I want cheaper groceries and have the spoons to walk there (it's a 25 minute walk, as opposed to the 10 minute walk to Berkeley Bowl which is famed for its organic produce but honestly with my meat-heavy diet it's not worth it). I got frozen tamales! I'm very excited about this. I got also other groceries like cereal and shredded cheese and walked home.
- I felt like garbage today and couldn't go into Locus. I tried to write today too but it's been hard. Stayed in bed until noon, and while I'm not exactly sick, I'm really really fatigued: been going to bed at midnight and waking up at 6. I don't think my body likes that! Hopefully with all the rest I got, I'll be able to write today!
