Fanfic: DoPM
Jul. 17th, 2010 07:28 pmSo I was actually writing a review of Dream of Perpetual Motion by Dexter Palmer, but I got so angry writing it, I had to shelve it, many times. Then this morning I had a pretty terrifying nightmare which has its roots in hating Dream of Perpetual Motion, although it doesn't have much to do with what goes on in it, but at the same time, I rather liked the idea of Miranda running off from home every so often, siphoning off her father's resources to build herself a giant lab underground, so when Prospero accidentally blows up the world, because you know he would if Harry Winslow had let him live, she survives, rather than being pointlessly maimed into becoming a disembodied voice (seriously, the story is that fucked up).
I am not, however, good at writing my dreams out the way I dream them, and that plot doesn't make sense anyway, so I'm taking the sense of the nightmare and making it up as I go along. I'll be adopting the same strategy as the one I used for writing Harry Dresden / Hermione Granger ficlets - few hundred words at a time, focusing on a tight wordcount each session.
Anyway, this is all writerly blather, so, fanfic ahoy!

Prompt: Twitter exchange with challyzatb.
Characters: Captain Amara and Omi, of the Amaranth Jewel. I kind of made them up on the spot last year during NaNoWriMo, when I worked on the draft for the Fabulous Adventures of Princess Jussy. Amara was inspired by Aishwarya Rai, and Omi was inspired by Diana, the Acrobat in the Dungeons and Dragons animated series from the 90's, although Omi is much darker-skinned. Although they started out as quest companions for Jussy (and also to provide Jussy and Cailen a model for what a loving relationship looks like, since the latter two come from pretty emotionally messed up homes), eventually stories of their own came to my mind. Possibly because whenever I say "lesbian pirates", EVERYONE perks right up.

Ficlets, again!
Dec. 3rd, 2008 11:10 pmOK, I figure, as long as I'm writing at least 500 words of fiction a day and staying in the habit of doing that, I'm good at keeping my hand in the fiction world. And I'm really liking the ficlet thing, because it's making me practise in the whole "economical words" factor. Part of my problem is, due to NaNo, that I tend to ramble on and on without actually thinking about what I'm writing. So exercises like this keep my mind disciplined while I get some actual writing done.
That, and I really needed one of those mindless entertainment breaks. What better way than to spend some quality time with my special ship?

These are little ficlets which have little snapshots of what I imagine a larger Harry Dresden / Hermione Granger fic would be comprised of. Which I'll get around to writing. Eventually. But writing it like this is so much more fun!
